NUTRITION

The power of food

It's time we all acknowledge it:  food can be powerful medicine. We don't even know all of the pytonutrients in leafy greens, for example, much less how to replicate their exact chemical content in a multivitamin. There's so much more to the plants we harvest than their vitamins and minerals. Plants suck up nutrients, grab bacteria and even adopt energies from the soil and the environment where they grow. All of these become a part of you when you eat them.

And it works both in both good and bad ways.  That is, if the environment is doused with pesticides and weed killers and the soil is laden with chemicals, these too will become a part of your body.  That's why you need to care about your food. You need to care about the food you eat and care about the food that is available for us to consume as a society.

Food keeps us alive, but the right food enables our bodies to work at the optimum level--making us efficient physical entities and thoughtful, compassionate and caring beings. The right foods help us thrive!

GUIDING PRINCIPLES

When it comes to food, there are some really simple guiding principles.

  • For starters, eat real food. Eat less of the processed, packaged stuff and more of the stuff that originally came out of the ground.

  • Eat a variety of different fruits and vegetables. Some say, "eat the rainbow" and when you're talking about produce and not Skittles, that's a great idea because color usually translates into antioxidants and other healthful and healing compounds.

  • Cook for yourself as much as possible. When you cook you can control the ingredients you use. You are not very likely to add sodium stearoyl lactylate to your son's birthday cake, but the box cake manufacturer has.

  • Try to know where your food comes from. Make friends with your local farmers, frequent your local farmer's market. Enjoy the community of food from supplier to table of family and friends.

  • Be self-aware. Notice how foods make you feel. If you get a headache every time you drink coffee, consider it a message your body is sending you. Find something else that keeps you warm and wakes you up-- green tea, maybe?

NUTRITION COACHING

A little support can make a world of difference.

Everyone can use a little extra support. When it comes to nutrition--where research often underscores diametrically opposing views--having someone on your side can be a game changer.

Your integrative nutrition health coach can help you navigate a confusing food landscape, make connections between your dietary habits and your mood, and even understand how your sleep habits affect your food choices.

Still, you are the leader of your coaching experience. You set the priorities and your coach is the guide on the side. Providing a safe and open environment to explore the many influencing factors, your coach will help you make critical connections and support you in making sustainable lifestyle changes aligned with your goals, and that work with your life.
